The deluded ramblings of an Afropolitan at home in Ghana.
Certainly I don't think that workers wearing traditional/African/Ghanaian cloth on Fridays are "dressing down". Though I suppose there is a contrast with a suit and tie for men, and the dark skirt and jacket for women. Luckily for me, I have been able to wear "African" prints every working day. :-)

I thought it was called national wear day or something? And I think it probably has a lot to do with the colo mentality that STILL haunts us here in Africa. I personally NEVER sectioned off my national pride dressing to Fridays and would wear Afro-cultured clothing any day I liked and no one ever told me I could only dress that way on Fridays. I think it's really down to personal choice. To be honest with you they only wear all that garb in the west because it's cold and I never did get why African men would put themselves through the torture of wearing a suit in this African heat. Seems a bit like nobody is willing to think things through themselves but would rather just do what everyone else is doing (like sheep, and you know where they are going...)
